It is equal to the force of gravity acting on a mass of one avoirdupois pound at the sea-level on the Earth's surface.

Kip

The Kip is a unit of force that is mainly used in the United States and is equivalent to 1000 lbf. It was named after Louis Alphonse Kiptch whose name has become an English verb ‘to kip’ which means to move up suddenly. The kip is mainly used in civil engineering when discussing loads or in engineering when talking about compression or tension.
